About the Courses

This set of one-day short courses starts by introducing the fundamentals of optical fiber technology, passive fiber devices, and active components. The complete series provides the attendee a comprehensive overview of fiber optic sensing systems, including biomedical, chemical, pathogen, position, pressure, temperature, intrusion, magnetic, acoustic, radiation, acceleration and rotation. The objective of the series is to provide the attendee with a broad understanding of the fundamental science, basic operation, technology choices, manufacturing methods, terminology, supplier base, market landscape, and practical aspects of fiber-optic sensors. A variety of approaches to optical sensing will be surveyed, including sensors based on intensity, polarization, wavelength, and interference (phase). "We are delighted to add this new series to the SJSU Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department's offerings of short courses in emerging and in-demand technologies," said Dr. Fred Barez, Chairman of the SJSU MAE Department. "Guided-wave technology is evolving rapidly from niche to commercial applications in the aerospace, defense, homeland security, medical, scientific, petroleum, electrical, and civil engineering sectors. We are seeing continued demand for optoelectronic knowledge from these and other key industries."

About San Jose State University

San Jose State University is the Silicon Valley's metropolitan university, located on 154 acres in downtown San Jose. SJSU's 30,000 students are offered the best of both worlds: a large, multicultural campus and personal attention from faculty members in the smaller setting of the university's eight colleges. San Jose State is the oldest of the CSU's 23 campuses, dating back to 1857. Today, the university provides more graduates in business, science and engineering to the Silicon Valley than any other school in the nation.
