SHORT COURSE ON FIBER-OPTIC TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCED
San Jose, California (February 12, 2002) - “The ABC’s of Fiber Optic Technology” is
the first in a series of short courses developed by Silicon Valley Photonics Ltd.,
and presented in association with the Engineering Department of U. C. Berkeley Extension.
Class convenes in
February 25 and 26 - Berkeley Extension (1995 University Avenue, Berkeley.)
April 8 and 9 - Berkeley Extension Peninsula Center (1991 Broadway, Redwood City.)
June 10 and 11 - Berkeley Extension Downtown Center (425 Market, San Francisco.)
About the Course
This two-day course introducing the fundamentals of optical fiber and fiber-optic devices
is intended to demystify this technology for non-technical as well as technical individuals.
Attendees will gain an understanding of the essential concepts and terminology of fiber optic
technology including: how it works, how it’s manufactured, key players, combining photonic
devices to make larger systems, and the practical limitations. "This new course is an important
addition to a very popular series of technology briefings for non-technical people, ranging from
fundamentals of electronics and computing, to semiconductor and internet technologies. This course
supplies a solid grounding in fiber-optic technology," said Dr. Richard Tsina, Assistant Dean,
Professional Studies and Chair, Continuing Education in Engineering. "Fiber optics and photonics
is the fundamental enabling technology for our future high-speed communications services,
including high performance telecommunication and data communication networks, and emerging new
consumer services. Employees in those industries and in related industries can gain a competitive
advantage by developing a background in this key technology."
Highly Rated by Students
"I am very pleased that the course included many of the relevant technical issues I work with
day-to-day. It helps me to better communicate in the language my engineering customers speak,"
said Eric Hundley, a Senior Sales Engineer at Tyco Electronics.
"The class was great - the theory was a good review, and the practical examples helped a lot.
Having folks from different backgrounds encouraged discussion, which was invaluable,” said
Dennis Blanco, a System Product Manager at Caspian Networks, “I have already recommended the
class to other managers."
"The ability of light to transmit voice, video and data signals through glass seemed an
imponderable mystery, until I took the SVP/Berkeley course. The mystery reveals itself as
the instructor explains the basics of fiber optics, a journey not to be missed by anyone
interested in how the technology works," said Michael Holiday, an Account Manager at Pycon
Inc.
